Picture of Tracy Koga

“Backstage” producer Tracy Koga will say the best part of her job are the very interesting people she meets on a daily basis, whether famous or not, they all have a story to tell! Twist’in with Chubby Checker, paw painting with dogs, or slicing and dicing with a samurai sword...those are only SOME of the things Tracy does for her job!

In her down time Tracy can be seen in the hockey rink, sitting on the football sidelines, or walking the golf course, NOT as a participant but as a spectator, cheering on her two sons with husband Kevin Neiles.

BILL KLYSH
Co-Host

Picture of Bill Klysh

Bill Klysh, formerly the bass player for Winnipeg bands Lesterhazy and The Meaning of Fish, is a prolific songwriter who performs his own brand of acoustic music. While he dabbles in different styles, his major influences are melodic pop rock bands such as the Beatles, Crowded House, Fleetwood Mac, U2 and Squeeze.

His first CD The Linus Lock was produced by Lloyd Peterson of Private Ear Recording and released in 2003.

Having accomplished his life-long goal of recording 'his own pop rock album', Bill took a few years off to raise a family and has just recently begun work on a new project The Acoustic Pop of a Melody Junkie which he hopes to release sometime in 2008.

Bill's new songs and latest performances demonstrate significant growth as a musician. He continually strives to create the 'perfect pop song' while producing a body of work that is both meaningful and fun to perform.

Words by WERNER VAN HARDER

www.myspace.com/wernerharder

Werner VAN Harder at the Down Town Coffee Ground

Born in Winnipeg's Women's Pavilion in 1953, and always too square (or straight) to have any friends his own age, I started hangin' out – at da library, when I was 13.

I 'tink it was 1966, (Sorry – vernacular is fun), I loved reading, as did/do my parents (Mom's still with us) and I was a dictionary geek.

• Every 5 years I have read through the dictionary to find the new words, or see the words that have fallen out of use, 'til 2006 when I created my own dictionary of Van-isms and now I use these words for political rant, trying to make the nonsense make sense.

Like my Dad would have wanted me to. I write because of a wonderful woman (in fact many wonderful women), in my life, at 'my' beginning 15/16 years my English teacher was Sharon Engbrecht, and she was a person, and not just a position at Hugh John Macdonald, she was interested in her 'kids' developing, to the point that one class day she brought a tape deck in to school and played Simon and Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence" for us, and I became mesmerized by the pictures in their words. I still am!

"... and the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls", if you know anything about tenement life, • read slums – even here *.

She was inspirational. She was killed, last year ('07), along with her daughter in a devastating car accident, and I only heard about it well after the fact, (SO), she is one of the many important women in my life, to whom I now dedicate myself to making the world a better place, or to scream my head off (... on paper), TRYING!

For my mother TINA, for my daughter KASSARA, for MY world filled with Sisters.

TRACY BONE

Tracy Bone's debut album No Lies, released in February of 2008 (Arbor Records/EMI), is delivered with passion and wonderful complimentary harmonies that speak about honesty in relationships. She performs with a full band and also does acoustic versions of her original songs that showcase her vocal style and her 'real woman' perspective on life. She is a singer songwriter who blends country roots with rock, pop and R&B influences by such female artists as Faith Hill, Sheryl Crow, Alicia Keys, Bonnie Raitt and Patsy Cline Her songs and distinct style deliver messages of hope, courage, love and triumph. The album earned her top honours as 'Best Female Artist' at the 2007 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards.

"In order to compete in the female country vocal field you need to sing with passion, discipline, enunciation and control. To move comfortably between controlled singing to twanging falsetto is key to your success as a female country singer. Tracy has all of this and is particularly lyrically strong.

Her vocal performances are clean across the board on the CD. Highlights include 'Lonely With You', a country rock ballad sung like a mature country female vocalist. This is beautiful work. I love this song. This song is lyrically strong and is from the old school of country rock. 'Soldier Of Love' is a little R N' B country style. It starts as R N' B but moves on into up-tempo country rock.

Tracy is a soulful vocalist with excellent control and discipline. Her work shows at the microphone. Her enunciation is excellent and I have no trouble understanding her lyrics.

The song 'Sweetest Surprise' is a wonderful vocal treatment of a good lyric. The band swings it with precision and lets Tracy carry the song. This song is very strong in a lot of respects. It has an infectious guitar solo. It speaks to elevating power of a renewed faith in love. Finding a love that heals grief and broken hearts. Tracy sings... I almost lost my soul to the blues, your love renewed my faith in forever.

The title song 'No Lies' is the collaborative work with her fiance, J.C. Campbell. It takes a mature country artist to bare their soul with lyrical honesty, to pledge their devotion to one another and are willing to share their 'love story in front of an audience".

CD Review, Jamison Mahto
Indeginous Internet Chamber of Commerce

The single 'Games' was named '2006 Single of the Year' by NCI 105.1 FM on-line/call-in listeners.

"The song captures the essence of love, regret and hope in three verses, a chorus and a bridge, all set to a jaunty, early Steve Earle vibe that brings the essence of Bone's talent into sharp, clear focus".

CD review, Uptown Magazine 2007

The pre-released EP of her album earned most nominations by any artist at the 2006 Aboriginal People's Choice Music Awards – 'Best New Artist', 'Best Country CD', 'Single of the Year', 'Best Songwriter' and 'Best Album Cover Design'.

The album was also nominated in the 'Best Pop Recording' category at the 2007 Indian Summer Music Awards in Milwaukee Wisconsin.

Tracy has performed and has been featured on national television and has been showcased on CBC. Radio.

As for her live performances, she owns the room. Her incredible voice and sultry stage presence is electrifying – a must see!

JD EDWARDS

The JD Edwards Band is sometimes a five-piece electric folk-rock experience and other times it is a laid back acoustic group that is quickly becoming a staple in the Canadian music scene. Through incessant gigging and innovative groovy song-writing, JD Edwards is breaking through the barriers of mediocrity and giving Canadian listeners something to dance about. The band’s sound is a synthesis of Blind Melon’s funk and The Black Crowes’ blues, while JD sings with the stoned sexiness of Dave Matthews and the orgasmic outbursts of Ben Harper (don’t worry, he also cleans up after himself). They manage to musically acknowledge their influences without compromising their ingenuity or principle; JD Edwards and his bands will take you on a new adventure in a familiar place every time.

Born in Oshawa Ontario, JD Edwards wrote and performed his music in Kingston and Toronto, before figuring out, in 2005, the Winnipeg music scene was something he wanted to be part of. There he met self-proclaimed “Guitar-Love-Maker,” Mike Ormonde, who then introduced JD to the rest of his band: Jesse ‘Poison’ Ives on bass, John Kirouac on saxophone, flute and percussion, and Troy ‘Bot’ Stratner. With such an eclectic mix of players, an eclectic sound was sure to follow.

Now, with more songs than you can shake a drum stick at, The JD Edwards Band has been unleashing their energetic original repertoire across Winnipeg joints, and will soon do the same across Canada. Already, in the infancy of the group, they have played with some of Winnipeg’s finest, including The New Meanies, JP Hoe, Serena Postel and Patrick Keenan, and have made several appearances on 101.5 UMFM and 92.9 KICK FM.

The JD Edwards Band has released a 3-song demo EP and in the near future will let the world hear their full length electric album with Producer and Engineer Mike Wagner and an acoustic live recording at The Gas Station Theatre with producer Dan Donahue. Both discs will consist of all original songs ranging from the personal matters of spirituality, to the uplifting themes of having fun with the ones you love. Along with Canada, tours of the US and Europe will be planned after the release of the debut LP.

SERENA POSTEL

www.serenapostel.com
www.myspace.com/serenapostel1

"Serena Postel is the real deal....unbridled soul, bottomless energy and captivating intensity, it's what they call real talent. You can't teach what she's got at the core of her music; you either have it or you don't. She has it in spades."

Aaron Garner, Singer Songwriter, Toronto

Riddled with a manic propensity for introspection, this Winnipeg born and raised singer-songwriter began her musical journey by grabbing an abandoned back lane guitar and going toe-to-toe poetically with her own reflection and imagination.

Soon after, local film producer Kevin Doherty discovered Serena busking the streets of Winnipeg. Surprised and verily impressed with her fire, he invited her to provide some music for a project he was casting. Not only was her song Lullaby used in Doherty's 2007 film release, 'Wild Turkeys', but sensing a certain je ne sais quoi, he later cast her as the bitchy store clerk in the film (Cinderella happily wore the slipper).

Serena has lent her voice to other Manitoba musicians such as Jet Set Satellite for an acoustic remake of a song from their first record also featuring Martha Wainwright. She also provided backup vocals for renowned multi-talent Scott Hinkson's 2006 full length release of Tracking Outside In.

Hinkson and Serena’s mutual respect and appreciation for each others music led to his producing her debut release entitled Spare Change (November 2006). Hinkson truly captured the essence and haunting elements of the many moods of Serena's music on this EP. Spare Change offers rich textures of fierce guitar riffs, e-bow leads, smooth arrangements which never overshadow Serena's powerful voice that together is pleasing to a broad spectrum of genres.

"Serena is a hurricane force vortex of emotion, her ferocious performances are something to behold and be reckoned with."

Dan Frechette, Singer Songwriter, Winnipeg

Serena endures in the mind of anyone who has had the pleasure of experiencing her live and are left with a personal sense or relationship to her and her songs, no matter what the venue size.

"Serena Postel may have been an unknown quantity when she took to the stage Sunday evening at the Showroom but all that changed within the space of a hour long set. She made us feel as if we knew her via the raw honesty of her lyrics, emotionally charged guitar playing and caffeinated asides. It was like suddenly meeting a ferocious and intriguing young woman at a local coffeehouse and wanting to spend the rest of the evening just talking to her; or, in this case, listening to her sing. This lady doesn’t sing these songs. She tears into them like she has been living on the street and this is her first meal in days. Skin and bones. Blood and tissue. Heart and mind. Whew! No wonder they call her “Winnipeg’s firecracker”.

Rick Dennis, Duncan Garage Showroom, BC

2007 was busy with tours from the West to the East ends of Canada, and many performances on a variety of the festival stages over the summer. Serena is now preparing her next record, expected to be released this spring. A full length album with dynamic guitar riffs escorting clever writing which showcases Serena’s voice with beautiful conviction.

"Serena Postel possess a raw, feminine talent of which the music world is in dire need. Her rapier wit is a formidable weapon in both her lyricism and her stage banter. She is Winnipeg's firecracker."

Nathan Rogers, Singer Songwriter, Winnipeg

ELECTROQUTIE

www.myspace.com/electroqutie

Picture of ElectroQutie

Here is my bio. Repeat it word for word to everyone you ever meet... change the punctuation depending how excited u are, but don't forget to tell everyone... only then can you receive the full message and joy that ElectroQutie will bring to you. These are the most important words ever spoken, written or thought.

ElectroQutie is the greatest thing you'll ever hear, feel, smell, touch or taste (just ask... he'll let you lick him.... kinky that way). He was born to county known folk guitar player adequate Sandra Ridgway, and Insurance Broker exceptionel Steven Kilrea. He lived a pretty pointless first 16 years... saved a few lives, cured serious illnesses... dated your mother... . but then he found somebody who touched his soul. Went deep down into his heart with a chisel and showed him everything he could ever want.... that someone was a little man named Jesus.

So ElectroQutie went to church and university to study theology. He picked up a guitar and started singing praises to the Lord, quickly developing a generic sound that most would envy. However this was not enough for one ElectroQutie, as much as it was cool being the greatest Christian rocker ever... christian rock requires that you suck... so he just had to get out of that racket. So he took to the streets to find many a muse. It was on top of the Rideau Centre with a cardboard guitar that ElectroQutie began penning the true masterpieces which come to be expected of him.

Fueled by cold, dirt, hunger, a deep sexual frustration and jealousy over his mother's guitar collection (it's pretty kickass), ElectroQutie sang his observations of a world going to the dogs. Drugs, pedophilia, Freud, prostitution, mistakes, hitchhiking, Jesus, suicide, eschatology, AIDS among numerous others are all present in every single song (that's why he was named Mr. Universe).

Once he saved the great city of Ottawa from the doom that awaited it, he proceeded west to Winnipeg, to do the same to an unsuspecting pool of evil (they even have a Red River [what makes it red - that's right the fires of Satan]) He started spreading his revelations of lust and greed when he found two men with like-minded ideas who were only slightly less attractive than him (you know I'm hot) - Steven Hupe... the brainchild behind the Anarchist Possum Revival Orchestra, and co-founding member of what will soon be known as the greatest band ever - The Jonestown Escapists... and Werner Harder who remains his conspiracy theorist every evening (in bed lol, jk, rotflmao, omg, gtg, ttyl, brb).

Back. The End. Spread this message or perish.

Love and Respect.
