July 30, 2008...
It just keeps getting better and better all the time!
We had a few newcomers again this week. Love it!
Karen Admundsen, who is one half of the duo Querkus www.querkus.net www.myspace.com/querkus performed for her first time tonight. She had some difficulty finding Charlie's, but we are a very understanding crew. It was well worth the wait! Everyone really enjoyed her set. She is a classically trained pianist and has a beautiful voice. Hope to see you again soon Karen!
Tim Braun www.myspace.com/timbraunmusic was another newcomer. His songs were very upbeat and groovy and had everyone tapping their feet! Good job!
Jake Chenier www.jakechenier.com came by to do his thing. He is a fine children's performer, but his 'grown up' music is just as wonderful. He has a voice as smooth as a French Vanilla milkshake! I'm quite pleased that he made it down to Charlie's to share with us!
Gary Flater played a set and then got his son Jake up to do a few songs... The Sounding Board open mic encourages young performers to participate!
Kurt Tittlemier of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra www.wso.mb.ca and Winnipeg Classical Guitar Society www.myspace.com/winnipegclassicalguitar came by again and played for us. He is on holidays and happy to hang out at The Lounge of Charlie O & Friends...
The Fleetwoods (Anndrea Hermann on guitar, Aaron Shorzman on mandolin and Alan Lloyd-Owen www.myspace.com/alanlloydowenmusic on electric violin – a new line-up) played a fine set. They sounded good and will be hosting an open mic at La Scala every Thursday night in the lounge. Drop in and check it out.
We also had a great line-up of poets that included Michael O'Neill, John Cunningham, Werner VAN Harderwww.myspace.com/wernerharder, Shelly Genthon and Tim Jackson.
Some of our regulars were here in fine form as well... ElectroQutie www.myspace.com/electroqutie, Cam Miller, our resident music trivia expert, and Bill or as we so fondly call him 'The Klysh' www.myspace.com/bklysh.
Hamish Gavin, a good friend of mine, dropped in with a few amigos by the name of Frank and Kenny and they ended off the night.
The music trivia question was not answered... The 70s – The Sneaky 70s – Roger Whittaker's LAST FAREWELL recalled the beauty of his homeland. What was it? Answer: England.
Of course Cam had another question waiting... In this week, in 1973, the still largest attendance (600,000) all enjoyed this headlining band at Watkins Glenn International Speedway. Who was it? Answer: The Allman Brothers. Can't remember who got the correct answer as I didn't write it down!
We'd also like to take our hats off to Tim Butler www.timbutlerwinnipeg.com www.myspace.com/timbutlerwinnipeg, the "ARTIST OF THE MONTH" for July 2008. He's has to be one of the best guitar players I know and deserves to be recognized for his immense talent!
July 23, 2008...
Another fantastic night! Our regulars and some performers that we have missed dearly!
Gary Flater dropped in with one of his daughter's Theresa. He's brought three kin to the open mic and all are very talented!
Ian Wheeler came by. We haven't seen him for awhile. Check out his myspace profile at www.myspace.com/ianadamwheeler. You'll like what you hear!
Jasmine Netsena www.myspace.com/jasminenetsena from Yellowknife, NWT, who I met at the Down Town Coffee Ground in July signed up for her first performance at The Sounding Board. She had some trouble finding us, but we were very pleased to see her. The audience was very appreciative too... also a hidden treasure!
Kurt Tittlemier of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra www.wso.mb.ca and Winnipeg Classical Guitar Society www.myspace.com/winnipegclassicalguitar graced our little stage and blew everyone away! We are very proud to host such talent!
Tim Butler www.timbutlerwinnipeg.com www.myspace.com/timbutlerwinnipeg, our "ARTIST OF THE MONTH" for July 2008 also played a fine set – some classical and some flamenco. What a night!
Didn't do a music trivia question. We'll save it for next week!
July 16, 2008...
We had a few newbies this time out and some folks that haven't been for awhile...
Miriam Neuman, fiddle player from Beggar's Brawl www.beggarsbrawl.ca, came by with a friend by the name of Jack Peters. He accompanied her on guitar. They performed a piece by Shooglenifty called "Whiskey Kiss". Great opening set!
Shannon Rayne www.myspace.com/shannonpoetry from Vancouver did some poetry and collaborated with Miriam and Jason Ross www.myspace.com/jasonandfriends (who got up later with Aaron Shorzman to sings some tunes...) on some of her pieces all of which tugged on our 'sexy' heart strings!
Ryelee www.myspace.com/ryeleemusic also dropped in. I saw Rheanna at Folk Fest, but didn't have the opportunity to hang out and listen to the jams! It sure was nice to hear her sing!
Newcomer Joe E. Beaudette www.myspace.com/joeebcountry performed for the first time. He is a friend of my nephew Marcel and I met him many moons ago at a campfire jam in St. Adolphe. Marcel gave me a disc/demo, but Joe E. never came by the open mic at the Regal Beagle or to The Sounding Board until now. He is an undiscovered talent! I hope to hook up with him to see if we can work together!
Another act that attended for the first time was The Situation www.thesituation.ca. Nick and Tyrone have a very unique sound. I hope that they will return to share again.
We actually did a music trivia question... The 80s and the 90s – 80s Song Themes – RELIVING THE PAST: "I am older now, I have more than what I wanted..." Do you question all the answers in this one? Answer: Wasted On The Way by Crosby, Stills, and Nash.
No one got the answer to this question and so Cam Miller provided another... What recently re-united... (with his band mates) guitar player guested on Joe Cockers' "With A Little Help From My Friends"... in1970? Answer: Jimmy Page. Tyrone won a Fort Garry shirt... or was it Nick?
July 9, 2008...
Made a Sounding Board sign for our camp at Folk Fest, but we didn't end up doing the open mic. It took most of the day and into the night to set up our camps and so we left the jamming for another night. Firedance Productions' www.firedanceproductions.com Wildfirewww.myspace.com/firedancepro had a show in the pit on Wednesday night. They were spectacular.
The Fire Pyxies www.myspace.com/firepyxies did a show on Thursday night and Saturday night. Sexxxxxxxyyyyyyyy! I have to thank the girls for their inspiration. I'm hooked on hoola hooping!
Even ElectroQutie www.myspace.com/electroqutie attended the fest. He is no longer a virgin!
I'd have to say that the best jam I experienced was in RV camping with Tim Butler www.myspace.com/timbutlerwinnipeg on guitar, Neil Goebel of Valsuzie on cello www.myspace.com/valsuzie, and Guy Galloway from Ontario on his home made lap steel (made from a hub cap) and sitar (made from a tin can). Their music was absolutely magical and will be etched in my mind forever!
Until next year!
July 2, 2008...
Tim Butler www.timbutlerwinnipeg.com www.myspace.com/timbutlerwinnipeg is the "ARTIST OF THE MONTH" for July 2008. Check out mysweetspot profile...
Well we had a great night. We celebrated Brad's b-day and had organic chocolate cake and brownies... yum!
Busy line-up too. Wayne McMillan started off the night. ElectroQutie www.myspace.com/electroqutie was next followed by Bill Klysh www.myspace.com/bklysh.
John Cunningham and Tim Jackson did some poetry. These guys don't have myspace profiles, but are definitely worth checking out live.
The Paegan Sunflowers www.myspace.com/paegansunflowers dropped in. We haven't seen them in a long time. They were great as they usually are!
Brad Fenwick www.bradfenwick.ca www.antigravityband.com, our guest of honour and Andrew Johnson, friend and fine musician did a few pieces together, namely All Along The Watch Tower by Jimi Hendrix and Down By The River by Neil Young. They also did a piece composed by Brad... a flamenco style instrumental. Sounded great!
Anndrea Herman and Aaron Shorzman stopped in to say hello to Brad and wish him a happy b-day.
Jason Ross www.myspace.com/jasonrossandfriends did his solo thing and performed a new song. Can't wait to hear his debut album which is in the works. He's recording with Howard Klopak of Groove Jungle Recording Studio.
Cam Miller is definitely one of our all-time regulars as is Werner VAN Harder www.myspace.com/wernerharder. He packs a punch every time he performs. Shelly Genthon, who is what we call a 'vision' poet, was also on the roster.
Basil Ganglia, the guitar plater for The Antigravity Project www.antigravityband.com and Brad Fenwick, the bass player, did some acoustic TAP songs. I got up and sang Illuminatzi with them. It was a great time!
Tim Butler, "ARTIST OF THE MONTH" for July 2008 www.timbutlerwinnipeg.com www.myspace.com/timbutlerwinnipeg ended off the night, who has also performed with TAP on a few occasions.
June 25, 2008...
Okay so I have a couple of announcements... next week we are having a party for Brad Fenwick, my partner. It's his b-day and we've invited a bunch of his friends. I've got a pretty full list so far and only have a few early and late spots left... so if you want to play, please let me know...
Also, there is no open mic on Wednesday, July 9th. For those of you who are going to the Folk Festival on Wednesday, I'm hosting The Sounding Board open mic at my camp site. I'll be in Area 4 near RV camping. Look for "The Sounding Board" sign.
For those of you who are going to be in town, I strongly urge you to check out Shawn Buckley, Legislative Lawyer and President of the Natural Health Products Protection Association (NHPPA) at the Centre Caboto, 1055 Wilkes at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, July 9th, 2008. He will be hosting an information session on Bill C-51 and C-52. Please visit my event page at www.mysweetspotproductions.com for more details.
And last but not least, "THE ARTIST OF THE MONTH" for July 2008 is Tim Butler!!! I'll be putting up a bio, pic and mp3 of some of his newest material for you to check out! Congratulations Tim!
Well, this was by far the most on time we've been in 16 months and we even started before 8 pm!
I wrote a poem on the spot called "The Sounding Board" – go figure – and read it in front of a small but appreciative audience that consisted of Tim Jackson and friends, Cam Miller and two patrons who said they were only staying for an hour, but ended up staying until the very end! They were great!
Tim Jackson went up next at the request of our two enthusiastic fans followed by a set by Cameron Miller. they just wouldn't let anyone sit down!
John Cunningham, who has been very ill, got a day pass to come to the open mic! Now that is dedication! We surely hope that he gets well soon. Our best wishes go out to him.
Ian Wheeler www.myspace.com/ianadamwheeler bought a harmonica and played his first song with it while strumming his guitar. While I can remember most of the names in my email address book, I can't remember the name of the two songs he does that are my favourite. I'll have to get him to write them down. In anycase, he was on his game!
Gary Flater played a funny cover song and two originals. His son Jacob also got up to do two songs. It's very inspiring to see that the younger performers are feeling comfortable enough to perform at Charlie's. We appreciate their talent!
Derrick McCandless made it down to The Sounding Board this week, but he played with an injured finger (had a mishap while working at home). His son Kieran accompanied him (his first time playing in public). Derrick is a fine player. He played slide and sang the blues... Hope to see him again soon.
Steve Hupe was supposed to be up next but wasn't able to make it for some reason. Mike Garbutt from the Musician's Network www.bytes4u.ca stopped in to see Gary and Derrick. We were able to slide him in for two songs and then we got Scott Place www.myspace.com/scottmichaelplace up as he had to go to his Grade 9 Class graduation. Scott runs the open mic at Dylan O'Connors on Portage on Monday nights. He brought his double next acoustic guitar that he found on ebay! He's a very talented songwriter and is a passionate performer. I'd personally like to team up with him on a future project!
Werner VAN Harder read and we listened. He's performing on Saturday night at an event at Ragpickers hosted by Kitty. I don't have all of the details, but please contact her directly if you'd like to know more spacekitt67@shaw.ca.
Shelly Genthon's words are very impactful. I like the way he just opens his 'book of pages' and focuses on the first piece that reflects his mood. Keep it coming Shelly.
Okay, so ElectroQutie www.myspace.com/electroqutie kicked ass tonight. I think it was one of his best performances. He also bought a beat box. Cam played it for him. The combo was pretty good and filled out his sound.
Tim Butler www.timbutlerwinnipeg.com was in the house once again. He's currently doing gigs with Tracy Bone www.tracybone.com and J.C. Campbell www.campbelljc.com and will be playing with them this coming weeked at Dauphin CountryFest!
Bill Klysh was really up again and played hard... Check him out on myspace at www.myspace.com/bklysh. Bill informed me that Agape wants us to do another fundraiser next year! This is a good thing!
So PC Miller got up again and did another set. He was gracious enough to entertain the eager audience early in the evening and so he got his half hour in again! I've asked Cam to be in charge of the weekly trivia question. He's agreed so watch out folks... he's a tough cookie and a wealth of information when it comes to the music scene in Canada and the States over the past 50 years!
No Remedy www.myspace.com/noremedybandsite did their last set as "THE ARTIST OF THE MONTH" for June 2008! It was a good one. These guys are really developing their sound and stage presence.
Last but not least was Jon and Soupie (one half of Valsuzie www.myspace.com/valsuzie) on electric banjo. They kicked! ElectroQutie joined them on stage with his beat box. The man actually has rhythm!
June 18, 2008...
So the advance sign-up procedures seem to be working. We were a little over on our time, but overall, it's a good thing. Also, good practice for the performers to set-up and monitor their time for when they start playing out a lot with other acts on the bill...
We had a special guest this week... Cameron Rogers, Rhonda Rogers' son... he got up, but was a little nervous. We look forward to the next time he comes out!
Gary Flater came by for his second time. He's got a lovely voice and his songs cover a variety of topics... some ballads and other songs are funny sing-alongs. Nice to see him playing out again.
Cam Miller was here in full form. He 'took' the stage not 'Berlin', for a half an hour despite our 15 minute time limit! We'll forgive you this time Cam!
Tim Jackson has been writing quite a bit. His poems are also about truth. He's become more confident on stage as a performer and has earned the respect of our in-house wordist Werner VAN Harder!
ElectroQutie www.myspace.com/electroQutie was next. He's pretty consistent with his performances and is always entertaining...
Shelly Genthon and Bill Klysh www.myspace.com/bklysh followed. Shelly did a few short but sweet pieces while Bill was in a mood and kicked it up!
Werner www.myspace.com/wernerharder read a short story he wrote in the 80s... he changed it up a little and started off the piece at "The Lounge of Charlie O & Friends"... it was really good... like to see that one published!
The Paegan Sunflowers www.myspace.com/paegansunflowers dropped in and we promoted their first bar gig at Shannon's on Tuesday, June 24th. They'll be playing with full gear on the 24th – guitars, harmonica, keys, hand drums... should be a great show!
Noah Marantz and Steve Pennicook came a little late and so we pushed them back. They are good together, We always look forward to hearing them play and we arepatiently waiting for their myspace account to be set-up!
No Remedy, "THE ARTIST OF THE MONTH" for June 2008 www.myspace.com/noremedybandsite got up and we fantastic. They sang a heavy song called Cadaver. Would love to hear this one with a full drum kit and electric guitar, but it did stand tall on its own!
Tim Butler www.myspace.com/timbutlerwinnipeg dropped in. He's so very talented... you just have to hear him play!
Mimi Vouk was the newcomer of the night. She's a friend of Noah and Steve's. The girl can sing. It was her first time performing and playing guitar. Can't remember the name of the one song she sang, but it is definitely going to be a hit single! Stay tuned for more of Mimi Vouk folks!
So we ended the night around 12:30 ish... a good time was had by all! See you next week... yes, there is going to be an open mic! I've changed my mind about taking the night off!
June 11, 2008...
It was a little bit of a slower night tonight, but still a good one!
Noah and Steve (Ronny James Trio) did the acoustic set-up. Steve, who works in the drum department at Long & McQuade played djembe. He also accompanied Cam Miller and a few other people.
Steve Hupe www.myspace.com/winterdusk did a fine set. I like his acoustic music.
John Cunningham did his thing and was not interrupted this time 'round... we had a little bit of an issue last week, but it has been dealt with. We're glad to see you back!
ElectroQutie www.myspace.com/electroqutie is going into the studio he tells us (with Steve Hupe) to record some songs... now that's a good thing!
Werner VAN Harder did a very strong set for his family who was in from out of town. They hung out all night! Shelly switched places with Werner so that he could go on a little earlier...
Tim Butler www.timbutlerwinnipeg.com www.timbutlerwinnipeg.com played as well as the Paegan Sunflowers... www.myspace.com/paegansunflowers they were great. Had a good guitar sound!
Ian Wheeler www.myspace.com/ianadamwheeler had a great set too and I think the best one since he's been coming to the Sounding Board Open Mic!
Shelly closed out the night as it seems he usually does... what a trooper he is!
Next week we'll have Gary Flater and Derrick McCandless performing. Gary has performed one other time and it will be Derrick's first time. Really worth checking out...
June 4, 2008...
No Remedy is the "ARTIST OF THE MONTH" for June 2008. Check out mysweetspot profile.
It was another busy night with 17 performers attending! It was the first time that we assigned time slots. It did keep things on track and we went from 8:15 ish straight through to 12:30 am without a break!
The newcomers this week was Gary Gach www.myspace.com/garygachmusic. Gary is a friend of Matt Ward's. He's a really strong performer and plays with a band called Juniper Drive www.myspace.com/juniperdrive. Hope to see you back Gary...
Matt Ward www.myspace.com/mattwardsolo played a little set and came by to promote his upcoming show at Academy Food Drinks Music on Saturday, June 7th. He's playing 2 45 minute sets starting at around 8 pm.
Ryelee www.myspace.com/ryeleemusic also stopped in to let everyone know about their official CD Release Party on Tuesday, June 10th at 8 pm at the Orbit Room on Pembina Hwy. After that, they are off on a little tour in Ontario! Now that's exciting. They're still getting airplay on local radio and the internet too!
Colin Ward came by. We haven't see him for awhile. He has a lot of great material. It was nice to have him back!
Martins Weah and Tim Butler www.timbutlerwinnipeg.com www.timbutlerwinnipeg.com stopped in. They were stellar... they are playing at Camp Manitowabi this weekend as well as the Paegen Sunflowers www.myspace.com/paegansunflowers who were awesome too!
Noah Marantz did a solo set. He's really good and him and his mates (The Ronny James Trio) might be playing at the 1st Year Anniversary of the Down Town Coffee Ground www.myspace.com/downtowncoffeeground in August!
Haven't been doing the Music Trivia Question as we are out of merch... need to chat with Fort Garry!
Don't forget to email or call to sign up in advance...
May 28, 2008...
We had an interesting night and 16 acts!!!
Michael O'Neill started off the evening and was accompanied by Brad Fenwick on guitar (my partner).
Rhonda got up and did some wonderful poetry and was accompanied by Cam Miller. He went up later solo.
Tim Jackson followed. He is really writing a lot these days and continues to share his thoughts on world politics, the human condition and fantasy games!
Uncle Donny played a few tunes on his 12-string. He is quite an accomplished player.
Aimee played next www.myspace.com/emmaaimelia. Now this young performer definitely has a career ahead of her. She is a great songwriter and has a powerful voice that is quite unique.
Tim Butler www.myspace.com/timbutlerwinnipeg www.timbutlerwinnipeg.com played with Stephanie, Gary Flater's daughter. She is really a good young performer and has a style all her own...
Werner VAN Harder was in fine form www.myspace.com/wernerharder and boy he sure is a force to be reckoned with.
Shelly Genthon and John Cunningham also graced the stage and shared their words. I really like these guys.
Ian Wheeler www.myspace.com/ianadamwheeler did a few tunes. He's been coming out to the open mic on a regular basis. His songs are interesting and I love his vocal style.
Jason Ross www.myspace.com/jasonrossandfriends was sign up with friends. He hasn't been for awhile and so it was nice to hear him play with Glen Layton...
Soupie and Jon McPhail of Valsuzie www.myspace.com/valsuzie also played and they were really good.
Bill Klysh www.myspace.com/bklysh , our "ARTIST OF THE MONTH" for May 2008 came late night, followed by No Remedy www.myspace.com/noremedybandsite and the Paegan Sunflowers www.myspace.com/paegansunflowers ... boy what a night!!!
BTW folks, don't forget to check out No Remedy at the Down Town Coffee Ground www.myspace.com/downtowncoffeeground on Monday, June 2nd. It is their first acoustic show and they'll be opening for Mary Kastle www.marykastle.com and Christa Couture www.christacouture.com of BC who are on tour. They are also the "ARTIST OF THE MONTH" for June 2008!
May 21, 2008...
Hi there folks! Yes, it's been a long time. I've been extremely busy with events, but had some time to get caught up. Because I haven't updated the blog since the beginning of April, I'll tell you what happened this week and give you the highlights over the past month and a half...
First of all, I wanted to let you know that Bill Klysh is the "ARTIST OF THE MONTH" for May 2008. Check out mysweetspot profile and give a listen to "With The World". Also wanted to tell you that the Agape Table For Kids benefit concert we hosted on Monday, May 12th, 2008 (Bill's b-day) was a success and we raised more than $2000! It was a great night. Thanks to all of the artists who participated including Bill Klysh, Werner VAN Harder, The Paegan Sunflowers and The Shuckers who frequent The Sounding Board open mic! I just spent all of last night dumping down the recording into Protools. Everyone that wanted to be recorded will get a copy as a thank you for their participation!
So this past Wednesday was pretty busy...
Aimee Lecnik www.myspace.com/emmaaimelia of the Muddhands www.myspace.com/thethreepeople started out the night. She also did one song with ElectroQutie later in the evening.
Ian Wheeler www.myspace.com/ianadamwheeler who has been hanging out at Charlie's was next. He's got some interesting tunes. Worth checking him out!
We did a Steve Hupe www.myspace.com/winterdusk, Jonestown Escapists www.myspace.com/thejonestownescapists, ElectroQutie www.myspace.com/electroqutie medley after Ian. Yes they hogged the stage for awhile. We'll have to cut it back next week as it's been pretty busy, we're starting late and ending late!
Werner VAN Harder www.myspace.com/wernerharder had the room riveted. He's is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with! He was interviewed on Shaw TV the night of the Agape event and kicked ass. A friend video taped his performance and we recorded it off the board. We'll let you know when it is up on his profile.
Matt Ward www.myspace.com/mattwardsolo has been coming to the open mic for the past two weeks. He was away travelling for eight months in Asia and has written a bunch of new songs. They are really good. You can check him out at Academy Food Drinks Music on Saturday, June 7th. He's playing two 45 minute sets! Way to go Matt!
John Cunningham who we didn't expect to see for quite some time as he recently had major surgery showed up! We're glad that he is recovering so quickly! He's in a good headspace and is working on an event that we'll be telling you more about as things develop.
Noah Marantz did his solo acoustic thing. He's from Calgary I believe and is finding his feet in Winnipeg. Come and check him out. He's been coming by on a regular basis.
Paul Cameron Miller, with new haircut and beard, played next. Paul really is a fantastic guitar player and songwriter and should be playing shows around town in my opinion! He performed a poem with Neil Goebel on cello. It was fantastic. I'd like to hear more of that!
WTF! (Jason Ross, Glen Layton, and Neil Goebel) did a few songs. It's nice to see them play together. Jason and Glen have been busy with life and Neil, well he just played a kick ass show at The Down Town Coffee Ground with his band Valsuzie www.myspace.com/valsuzie.
We had a surprise performance by Tonia, one of the bartenders at Charlie's who stopped in with Ms Andee Clements. She sang "Somebody To Love" by Jefferson Airplane with Simon Davis www.myspace.com/SixStringSamurai on guitar. Wow, the girl can sing!
I would have to say that the highlight of the evening was John & Terry, who were visiting from overseas. Karol Thor (his name is much longer, but this is easier to write and pronounce) of www.OneBlueDoorLive.com brought them to the open mic. Sure glad he did. There were awesome and did some 'funny' songs. They host an open mic in Hereford, Germany www.herford-unplugged.de. We're going to keep in touch!
Last but not least was Shelly Genthon. He's so very patient as he came late and ended up going last. However, we really enjoy his words and hope that he continues to share his 'book of pages' with us at Charlie's.
The music trivia question for this week was... Francis Bean is the daughter of which famous musical couple? Answer: Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. Karol won a CD. John's name was drawn for Charlie O's t-shirt!
May 14, 2008...
So highlights from the past open mics? On May 14th, newcomers Uncle Donny and Carlen (George).
Donny can play a wicked 12-string guitar and it was Carlen's first time playing in public. She has a sultry voice and a unique style.
Also Andrew Basham, the leader of the Manitoba Green Party www.greenparty.mb.ca dropped in and I convinced him to get up and recap his trip to Brazil, World Greens Conference. Hope to see him again to let us know more about what's green!
May 7, 2008...
The "ARTIST OF THE MONTH" for May 2008 is Bill Klysh. Check out mysweetspot profile and give a listen to "With The World". Bill deserves a medal for his work with Agape Table For Kids. He's poured his heart and soul into this event and we love him for it!
We had a visitor from Toronto, Layah Jane with Oliver (Mike Kosowski) www.layahjane.com. They were just fantastic. I really appreciate touring artists dropping into the Sounding Board while they are in Winnipeg. It's a good way to make friends and fans in an intimate and personal setting.
Also Michael O'Neil, who we've missed sorely at the open mic, came by too. He is a very interesting person to talk to and is a fine poet indeed!
April 30, 2008...
This was Ryelee's www.myspace.com/ryeleemusic last night as "ARTIST OF THE MONTH". Their debut album "The Fall" has been getting radio play at the following radio stations:
-

We had a huge line-up! Highlights... Uncle Donny's first time out... boy can he play guitar! I met him through the Absent Sound boys. He really should be playing out more!
Stuart Porteous www.microstarmusic.tv stopped in. He's got an album out called "Roads Travelled". Check him out.
Jason and Ethan played guitar, harp and sang. It was their first time at Charlie's and they played late night. Very interesting sound and very personal lyrics. Hope to see them again a little earlier in the evening so others can have a chance to check them out!
April 23, 2008...
Again, we had a great turnout... Renagde www.myspace.com/renterror www.renagde.com was the first plugged in band we've had at Charlie's. We did get told to turn down, but it was fun!
Cruise Waters came by with Tim Butler and played the Blues! It was his first time playing at Charlie's. He's working on a 2nd album. Hope to hear it soon.
Carly Dow www.myspace.com/carlydow also dropped in. She's been to The Sounding Board one other time if I recall correctly. I really like her singing and playing. I hope she stops by again soon!
Noah Morantz, Chad Kroeker and Steve played as a band for the first time as the Shakeys. Noah has relocated from Calgary and has been plugging in to the Winnipeg scene! Welcome!
Also J.D. Ormond www.myspace.com/ultramegaultra stayed until the end of the night and put on a spectacular show. He really is a hidden gem and hope to see an album release soon!
April 16, 2008...
I'd have to say that the highlights for this evening were No Remedy who are playing the Down Town Coffee Ground www.myspace.com/downtowncoffeeground on Monday, June 2, 2008 with Christa Couture and Mary Kastle of BC and J.D. Ormond www.myspace.com/ultramegaultra.
No Remedy is playing out under this name for the first time. So I'd like to see all of you open mic folks at the Red Road Lodge. They also have a myspace profile now. Check it out... www.myspace.com/noremedybandsite
J.D. will be performing at the 1st Year Anniversary of the Down Town Coffee Ground in August. Stay tuned for more details!
April 9, 2008...
The star of the show on this fine evening was Dean Haglund www.deanhaglund.com www.myspace.com/haglund. This name may sound very familiar to you and it should.
He is probably best known for his nine seasons playing Langley, one of the computer geeks known as "The Lone Gunmen" from the hit FOX TV series "The X-Files". he also starred in The X-Files spin-off series "The Lone Gunmen". His character is so popular that Dean is a main attraction at X-File and Sci-Fi conventions all over North America.
A long-time comedy improviser, Dean got his start with the like of Ryan Stiles and Colin Mockerie (Whose Line is it Anyway?) in the internationally award-winning Vancouver TheatreSports League.
Newcomers on the 9th were Soctty & Sarah. They played together. Scott sings and plays guitar and Sarah plays the sax! It was really groovy!
Also, one of the most talented guitar players I've seen at Charlie's with the exception of Kurt Tittlemier, Tim Butler and Cam Miller... a young man by the name of Patrick Cheater. He didn't leave his contact info and so I hope that he drops in some time soon. Incredible!
Also Graeme MacDonald www.myspace.com/graememacdonald www.forwardyesterday.com made a long-awaited appearance. He's working on his album and so we haven't seen or heard much of him lately. We really do appreciate his talent however and can't wait for the album to be done!
April 3, 2008...
Don't forget to check out Ryelee's 'Sweet Spot' profile. Ryelee is the "ARTIST OF THE MONTH" for April 2008. Give a listen to "The Fall" which is the title track on their debut album by the same name.
Great night for new faces!!!
In order of appearance we had Werner VAN Harder www.myspace.com/wernerharder (who went on again later)... he's performing at the Agape Table For Kids benefit concert on Monday, May 12th at Academy Food Drinks Music. Check out my event page here.
Steve Hupe went next. Steve has really improved as a performer since he's been coming to The Sounding Board. Check out his myspace profile at www.myspace.com/winterdusk.
The Jonestown Escapists www.myspace.com/thejonestownescapists were up. It was just a great night for these young lasses. The vibe was right, the room sounded good... what else can I say.
ElectroQutie www.myspace.com/electroqutie followed. He too has developed his live performance and really captivates the audience with his on-stage antics. His more serious songs are good too. Charlie really liked his song about 'fast food'.
Newcomer Wayne McMillan got up and sang a few of his originals. It was not a crazy busy night and so we were able to let him play a little longer. He brought his kids too who were on spring break. We always like it when youth drop in to the open mic. We're hoping that some time we might even have a few young performers at Charlie's. In anycase, we really enjoyed his songs and energy. Hope he comes back again soon.
Tim Jackson was another newcomer. He did some improv. While we encourage everyone to express themselves openly, we must on occasion ask performers and audience members to be respectful. I would suggest a change in subject matter...
Shelly Genthon brought his book of pages... I think he left a few behind. I have them Shelly and will bring them with on Wednesday.
Aimee and Jocelyn, otherwise known as the Muddhands www.myspace.com/thethreepeople, were the other newcomers at Charlie's. These two gals are absolutely amazing!!! They met on the Sunday prior to the open mic, attended Scott Place's open mic at Dylan's on Monday and found themselves at The Sounding Board together on Wednesday... they sound like they've played together for years. Both have different vocal ranges and sound, but very complimentary and beautiful harmonies... naturally!!! I hope we hear more of them...
Last but not least was Bill Klysh www.myspace.com/bklysh 'organizer extraordinaire' of the Agape Table For Kids benefit concert on May 12th. Read about it here! Bill's sounding mighty fine these days too!!!
The music trivia question was a tough one... Potpourri – Silly Songs – Pretitles Through The Years – You may not be too familiar with this next song from 1977, but it was a gold record and made it to No. 4 (No. 1 on the R&B charts). It was by a group called L.T.D. and was called BACK IN LOVE AGAIN. Its pretitle... Answer: It's True, It's True, I'm.
I don't believe anyone got the correct answer and so I decided to tell a blond joke... I don't normally share this sort of thing, but my friend Wayne told it to me and I couldn't resist... What is the definition of eternity... only blonds will know the real answer!!!
March 26, 2008...
So it's time for April's "ARTIST OF THE MONTH"... Congratulations Ryelee!!! Check out the links on the sidebar to read their 'Sweet Spot' profile and listen to "The Fall"!!!
It was an interesting night to say the least... something was in the air!
We actually got started at 8:30 pm tonight. That's the earliest in many months. Michael O'Neill started first and did three new pieces. He is such a talented poet!!!
Wayne Matthews got up to do a few jokes. They were silly!!!
Steve Hupe www.myspace.com/winterdusk was next. We haven't seen Steve for quite some time, but we have been assured that him and ElectroQutie have made up!!!
The Jonestown Escapists www.myspace.com/thejonestownescapists were down. They're back on track and I'm sure we'll see them a whole lot more.
Rhonda Rogers pulled a few poems from her scratch pad. She is very good and I'd personally love to hear her do more poetry at the open mic.
Werner VAN Harder got up and did the pieces that he's going to be performing at The Agape Table For Kids benefit concert on Monday, May 12th put on by Bill Klysh. I'll be putting up these particular pieces on the events page, but please go to the 'Words' section of my website and check out two of his new poems... and, Steve Hupe put up a myspace profile for Werner. It is www.myspace.com/wernerharder. Check it out!!!
Matt got up and did some freestyle spoken word (at least I think that is what it's called!!!). He basically ranted about China, global political situations and went on for quite some time. It was pretty much 'in your face'!!!
ElectroQutie www.myspace.com/electroqutie did his thing, but he seems a little disturbed by Matt's ranting...
Leila who drops into Charlie's once in awhile was inspired by the poetry and ranting that she heard and so she decided to share some of her writing with us. She read a piece on driving. It was filled with imagery and was quite clever, but then she is a lawyer!!!
Cam Miller was sounding pretty sweet! It was stellar and he played out his last week as "ARTIST OF THE MONTH" in style!!!
Ian Wheeler came back for his second time. He seemed more comfortable and was very good. The audience was very appreciative. Didn't get his myspace profile account, but maybe next time...
The Three Murrays played for their very first time in months. They were fabulous!!! Boy have we missed them!!!
Strawberry Quick, who is Lois Gillespiewww.myspace.com/loisgillespie, Donna Endacott www.myspace.com/dendacott, and Simon Fraser www.myspace.com/SixStringSamurai played for their very last time. Donna is moving to Toronto on April 1st. We'll miss her, but we will be able to keep in touch on myspace and facebook. Good luck Donna!!!
The Fleetwoods and Bill Klysh were going to be up next but we had a little tiff outside of the bar and Charlie shut her down...
The music trivia question was answered by Monique... The 70s – 70s Song Themes – HURTIN' LOVE–This singer's in trouble because of a "rambler and a gambler and a sweet-talkin' lady's man. And so the singer says this: Answer: Help Me by Joni Mitchell.
March 19, 2008...
So we had three, yes 3 new performers come out. Good night and great to see some unfamiliar faces!!!
Werner VAN Harder went on first. He's really blossoming as a performer. There is a soft side to him. Please check out two new pieces that he wrote in the 'Words' section of my website, one for Martins Weah and one for me!!!
Ian Wheeler came by to perform for his first time. He sang and played some original songs on guitar. We got a taste and would like to hear more. Very refreshing!!!
John Cunningham is a Charlie's regular now. We like that he comes by and as I said before, we have a stronger spoken word component to the evening than ever before... when he's not performing, he's busy writing reviews for several magazines...
Elton Plett played next. He has an incredible voice and his songs are very soulful. He has a self-produced CD called "City Songs" which is available directly from him. If you want one, you'll have to catch him on the fly when he's next at The Sounding Board.
Dave Guspodarchuk was another first-timer at the open mic. Again we welcome new talent and hope that you'll return. If you have any recorded music, we'd be into it and will kindly ask permission to share your email addies with everyone if you don't have a myspace, facebook or website to link to.
ElectroQutie hung out for the entire night and brought out a few friends. He's writing new songs and hope to hear them up on myspace soon www.myspace.com/electroqutie.
Stewart Porteous www.microstarmusic.tv dropped in for his first time too. He has a CD out called "Roads Travelled". He plays guitar and sings. Hope to see you soon Stewart... I don't think any of the new musicians got the vacuum cleaner this time 'round!!!
Tim Butler www.myspace.com/timbutlerwinnipeg www.timbutlerwinnipeg.com has been a regular lately. He truly is a wonderful player and we can't get enough of him. Keep on rockin' Tim... He'll be on-line more soon as Brad, my partner, is building him a super computer!!!
Last but not least was Cam Millier, our "ARTIST OF THE MONTH" for March 2008. He was at the Fugitives' show and so came by late. He managed to squeeze in a few songs. Check out his artist profile by clicking on the links on the sidebar.
The music trivia question was an easy one... The 80s and the 90s – Who Sang These? (80s) – DE DO DO DO, DE DA DA DA; DON'T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME; EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC; KING OF PAIN; WRAPPED AROUND YOUR FINGER; Spirits In The Material World... Answer: The Police. Shelly Genthon got the correct answer and won a CD!!!
March 12, 2008...
We had a quiet night tonight, but some great music!!! Sometimes I like it quieter. Everyone was paying attention me thinks...
Werner started the night off in VAN style. His words flowed in a way that I haven't heard in awhile. He seemed really relaxed and at ease more so than on other occasions.
Terrance Birston who used to frequent my open mic at the Regal Beagle in 2004 played for his very first time. He did his acoustic stuff which is somewhat different from the music he plays with his band Renagde www.renagde.com www.myspace.com/renterror. In anycase, it was great to have him out and we hope that he comes back soon!!!
Cam Miller was awesome. He loves being on stage... but we let him since he's the "ARTIST OF THE MONTH". Rhonda hung out to get out!!!
Tim www.myspace.com/timbutlerwinnipeg www.timbutlerwinnipeg.com and Martins dropped in, but Martins wasn't feeling well. Tim was great and is very good at putting his foot or should I say feet in his mouth!!! Don't forget about the benefit concert on Saturday, March 15th at Gordon Bell High School. Read about the event in my March 5th blog.
Bill Klysh performed. I think that he gets better all the time... isn't that a song or something... we love you Bill!!!
Shelly Genthon came back for more. I was commenting on how much he looks like my brother (and got Andee to confirm) "... it's the plaid and jean jacket thing".
Ryelee www.myspace.com/ryeleemusic (Rheanna by herself tonight) performed with Neil on cello and Aaron on mandolin. It sounded awesome. The acoustics at Charlie's are great because of the carpet, big arm chairs and all of the warm fuzzy energy that is exuded by you wonderful artists!!!
The Paegan Sunflowers www.myspace.com/paegansunflowers came by to listen thinking that their gig, the AGAPE Table for Kids Fundraiser on May 12th, was tonight!!! They ended up playing and it was stellar. They have such gorgeous voices... isn't that what Howard Manshein said about you?
ElectroQutie www.myspace.com/electroQutie was in fine form and walked around the bar with a bag of Easter chocolates. We really like your purse ElectroQutie!!! He was the last performer and so I opened up the stage for some jamming...
Aaron Shorzman got up to sing a Hank Williams III cover called "Crazed Country Rebel". It was really good and I think that he should do more solo stuff!!!
Lois Gillespie www.myspace.com/loisgillespie dropped in late night and we convinced her to sing a few... we have missed you Lois!!!
The music trivia question was provided by the new cook Jessy Oberding... What is the name of BB Kings guitar? Answer: Lucille. Kurt Tittlemier got the answer and won a Charlie O's t-shirt. Way to go Kurt and btw, nice to see you!!!
Lois wanted to win a t-shirt too so I asked Andee if we could giveaway another one (we're waiting on some more Fort Garry merch – we got cleaned out at the 1st Year Anniversary Bash a couple of weeks ago).
Who was the Beatles' first drummer? Answer: Pete Best. Werner won a t-shirt. I think its the very first time!!! Sorry Lois, maybe next week...
We decided to go to the Bella Vista to see Scott Nolan. I had to tear down and so we arrived later than the rest of the crew. Bill, Graeme and Rheanna helped out. Thanks... maybe next time we can all sit at a table together – no we're not anti-social...
March 5, 2008...
A little chaos on the sign up sheet and some interesting commentary!!!
Well our own Jason Ross is back from the Yukon and he was handing out a lot of hugs. I guess we'll call them The Fleetwoods for tonight... Andrea Hermann, Aaron Shorzman and Tim Osmond. I love their sound.
Cam Miller was up next. He is the "ARTIST OF THE MONTH". I've put up his bio, a pic and a sample of his artwork. Click on the sidebar to check out my sweetspot profile. I'll be putting up an mp3 soon.
Werner VAN Harder read some words. He a very talented writer in my opinion and writes about truth that some folks don't want to hear. All the more reason to keep it coming!!!
ElectroQutie www.myspace.com/electroqutie was miffed because Steve Hupe stood him up. He decided to milk it as he usually does and billed himself as 'The New Jonestown Escapists Cuz Steve Dicked Me'. Now isn't that creative!!!
Shelly Genthon read some poetry. I really like his words. He is a good story teller and carries a book around with him brimming with notes and bits of paper. Now Shelly just wouldn't be himself without his book.
John Cunningham followed. His poetry is very personal and often sexual in nature, but not offensive – at least I don't think so.
Tim Butler www.myspace.com/timbutlerwinnipeg www.timbutlerwinnipeg.com has been coming by lately. We always like to hear him play and sing. He has a lot of good original material and he know that the folks at Charlie's appreciate his talent!!! Tim is playing next Saturday, March 15th at Voice of the Children Benefit Concert – Supporting the Children of Africa. This event is hosted by The Weah Foundation (Martins Weah). Other performers include folk pop artist Ed Dufort, Shabback Gospel Choir, World Music by Martins himself and rising youth artist Ndembele. Tickets are only $5. The event takes place at Gordon Bell High School, 3 Borrowman. Doors at 2 pm. Show 2:30 to 4:30 pm. Come out and make a difference!!!
Bill Klysh got up after a short jam by Tim and Cam. He has written a bunch of songs and always plays a few that we haven't heard. When he's not hanging out with his kids, he's writing music or playing at The Lounge of Charlie O & Friends. Bill is putting on an event at the Academy on May 12th, 2008. It happens to be his b-day too. It's going to be an awesome show – a fundraiser for AGAPE Table for Kids www.agapetable.ca. Bill will be performing as well as The Paegan Sunflowers www.myspace.com/paegansunflowers (Jordan's cast should be off by then), J.C. Campbellwww.myspace.com/campbelljc, Tracy Bonewww.myspace.com/tracybone, JD Edwards www.myspace.com/thejdedwardsband and Serena Postel www.myspace.com/serenapostel1. It's only $5 to get in. There will be a door prize and 50/50 draw too. It's all about the kids. If for some reason you can't make it, you can still buy some tickets to support the cause or donate directly to AGAPE. Just visit their website for more info.
Last but not least were the Desolation Angels x 2 (aka Jon and Neil). FYI, Valsuzie www.myspace.com/valsuzie is headlining at the next Down Town Coffee Ground www.myspace.com/downtowncoffeeground on Monday, May 5th at the Red Road Lodge, 631 Main Street. It should be a good show!!! Opening act to be confirmed...
The music trivia question this week was difficult I thought... The 80s and 90s – Flashbacks from the 80s – Haunting words and melody: Yes they were dreamers, only dreamers. "Those summer nights when we were young, we bragged of things we'd never done." Answer: Desert Moon by Dennis deYoung. I think it was Cam that got the answer, but please do correct me if I'm wrong... I really do need to start writing down who won!!!
February 27, 2008...
It's that time... the "ARTIST OF THE MONTH" for March 2008 is Paul Cameron Miller!!! Check out mysweetspot profile by clicking on the sidebar links on this page...
So we had two new people out to The Sounding Board this week. Welcome!!!
John Cunningham, an old friend of mine who also performed at The Speakers' Corner at our 1st Year Anniversary Bash, read some of his pieces. They were quite provocative!!! Thanks for sharing.
Monique Ledrew performed for the very first time. We always like to see new faces! Hope you come back soon.
Mike Mulligan www.myspace.com/mikemulliganmusic did his thing. He hasn't been for awhile and so it was really nice to see him.
Tim Butler www.timbutlerwinnipeg.com www.myspace.com/timbutlerwinnipeg dropped in and played the blues. He also accompanied Monique. The vibe was really laid back and the audience was attentive.
Werner VAN Harder is writing some new material. He has given me copies of a few pieces that I'll be putting up on my website. Check out the 'Words' section for some of his other work.
Cam Miller was awesome and is always very supportive... he surely deserves the title of "ARTIST OF THE MONTH"!!! Now ElectroQutie www.myspace.com/electroqutie, you be nice!!! You already had your turn...
So I left it up to Steve Hupe www.myspace.com/winterdusk and ElectroQutie to battle it out – The Jonestown Escapists www.myspace.com/thejonestownescapists did not take the stage on this fine evening... it's not always about you ElectroQutie!!!
Shelly Genthon read some fine poetry. I have to apologize if I seemed a little distracted, but Glen and I were having a little fit in the back of the room. I'm sometimes a silly girl!!!
The Tumbleweeds played next... Glen Layton and Aaron Schorzman of The Three Murrays and The Fleetwoods. They are awesome together... who needs Murray Ross anyway... only kidding Jason!!!
No Remedy (Kevin Albo, Hudson Gavaert, and Joe St. Mars) played too. They had a friend join them on guitar, but I didn't write down his name and can't remember it. In anycase, I really like these guys. They are sounding good.
Simon Davis www.myspace.com/SixStringSamurai dropped in at the very end and we got him up to play some tunes.
Thanks Aaron for helping me tear down. It's always appreciated...
The music trivia question was provided by Matt Boutelier... Lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease and cured it naturally. What did he have? Well, as I said, I'm sometimes a silly girl. I didn't write down who answered the question, but the answer was: Hepatitis C. I do remember asking another one... Who originally wrote "Little Wing"? Answer: Jimi Hendrix.
February 20, 2008...
It was a great night!!! Lots of fun and I have to say thank you to Paul Cameron Miller for doing such a great job hosting The Speakers Corner in the restaurant!!! We had an awesome turnout considering it was our first time doing it!!!
Also thanks to our sponsors Fort Garry Brewing Company and The Sound Exchange for donating some cool swag and music, Charlie for donating some t-shirts, all of the performers, Graeme who was a huge help with keeping us on track, Wayne Matthews for supplying the balloons, Tim Osmond for helping Wayne put them up, Chrissy who was serving in the restaurant, Don and Darren in the kitchen, Andrea our lovely bartender and of course Charlie.
In addition, I got a beautiful card and incredible present – the Rolling Stone Magazine library on disc – cover stories spanning the past 40 years!!! Werner also gave me a wonderful present... a picture of the Joker and a mystical game called Arcana!!! Thanks everyone. What a surprise!!!
"Charlie's Tune" which was originally recorded at Roade Studios and pressed on a vinyl 45, went gold on February 21, 2008!!! The drummer from Mood Jga Jga Gordie Osmond, Tiny Tim and some other infamous types can be heard playing and praising Tubby's pizza... go figure!!! We presented Charlie with a CD version, but it didn't work in any of our players... I'll be redoing the burn and we'll try again on the 27th. I'll also be putting up the song for all of you to hear.
We managed to raise a little money to go towards the production of The Sounding Board Sessions, Volume I album we recorded in October of 2007.
We raised a total of $129.00. Our total expenses for the night were $27.39. The winning ticket number for the 50/50 draw was 075171 (Wayne Matthews). Sadly, we didn't do so well on ticket sales as we didn't have the lovely little miss girl guide (Donna Endacott) selling tickets for us this time 'round!!!
We did 3 music trivia questions and gave away a door prize...
1. The 50s and the Early 60s, The Tricky 60s – "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison – Van and his girl used to slip away quite often apparently for a little hanky panky, and they probably weren't dancing. They went to a number of different places, but which one of these did they NOT go to? Answer: Under Kelsey's bridge. ElectroQutie got the correct answer and won "The Secret" DVD. It will change his life!!!
2. The 70s, Flashback from the 70s – Lynyd Skynyrd addresses a popular singer in "Sweet Home Alabama" to inform him about the merits of their fair state. Who was this singer? Answer: Neil Young. Steve Hupe got the correct answer and won a Charlie's t-shirt and Two Rivers toque.
3. The 80s and The 90s, Navigating Through the 90s – It's the Cranberries and Dolores O'Riordan in 1994. She is head-over-hearls in love. She's such a fool for him and he's got her wrapped around his finger. Can this be the same woman that sang Zombie... Answer: Linger. Now I just didn't get this answer and no one else got it either. So I drew a ballot and the lucky winner was Simon Fraser (Davis). He was so pleased to have won something... a really nice Fort Garry fleece vest and Two Rivers toque.
The door prize was won by Aaron Hermann-Shorzman. It was a $25 gift certificate for Charlie's or Tubby's, a Charlie's t-shirt and a Neil Young DVD.
So a year has come and gone. You are all wonderful and I'm very happy to have all of you in my life...
